Acquiring and Distributing Knowledge Regarding God's Creation

January 6, 2012

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.            Romans 12:1-3  - KJV

Dear friends of the GHCA,

A blessed New Year to you all! There is so much for me to be thankful for in the past year and there is much to look forward to in the coming year as well. At the top of the list is our Lord and Savior as I'm sure you will agree.

January 26th will be our first meeting of 2012. Please put it on your calendar now.

Remember that we are now meeting in a new room, Room 143, at HFBC. That is just off the main lobby just to the left as you come in the main entrance on the west side of the building. Just look for the GHCA sign we will put out! (Don't go upstairs, we will not be there!)

We have a special guest speaker this month. Andrew Colman will present his talk titled The Christian Worldview: A Necessary Precondition for Science? Exploring the History and Philosophy of Science.Coleman answers questions like: Has Christianity advanced scientific discovery or been a hindrance? Why did the scientific revolution occur in Christian Europe? The elements of the scientific method had their earliest beginnings with ancient Mesopotamian astronomer-priests. Subsequent civilizations, for example the Greeks, Chinese, and Arabs, developed many of the tools necessary for investigating nature. But what we now call "science" germinated in the rich theological and philosophical soil of medieval Christendom and flourished when the Reformation ignited the scientific revolution. Nearly all of the founders of modern science were Bible-believing Christians.
During the Age of Enlightenment and the Nineteenth Century, Christianity still played an important role in promoting science. Yet most historians of science doubt that Christianity was solely responsible for the rise of science. Most people assume that science is a completely secular enterprise. But when one considers the assumptions about reality that are necessary to do science, it becomes clear that only the Christian worldview can consistently establish the theological and philosophical preconditions for knowledge about the natural world.

Andrew Coleman has a MS degree in Space Science focusing on planetary science and astronomy. He is currently completing the Master of Arts in Science and Religion at Biola University while researching the philosophical and theological roots of Western Science. Andrew has worked more than a decade as a writer for several NASA Johnson Space Center contractors and has written for numerous publications. He has taught Planetary Astronomy at Lone Star College-North Harris and currently teaches Engineering Communication at the University of Houston.

I recently heard Andy give this talk at the Houston chapter of RTB, where our brothers pursue the progressive approach to creation science. Andy's talk was a joy because it deals with the history of science that is common to all of the different approaches to creation science. It is packed with information about the history of science and the fact that science flourished only in Judeo-Christian cultures. This will be an enlightening adventure for all creationists and our secular friends as well. So invite one and all to join us. There will no doubt be a lively discussion and Q&A session following the presentation.

CALIFORNIA (NEW) CONTINUING: NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL):

From a friend:

...as many of you know there is a lot happening in David Coppedge's lawsuit right now against JPL.  Thankfully, his case recently survived a motion for summary judgment, thanks to some hard work from Bill Becker (and David himself, and many others).  This means his case is probably going to trial sometime in the next few months. It also means that we need people to be putting pressure on JPL to do right by David-i.e. to settle the case in David's favor.  In short, there are things that you can do to help David. Please let me explain.

If you have an e-mail list, or if you're a blogger (or Facebooker, etc.),  we're asking people to do 2 things this week to help David's case:

 (1) If you have an e-mail list: ASAP Please send an e-mail to your e-mail list asking people to contact JPL and pressure them to do right by David and settle the case favorably.  Below is sample text that you can send them.  You can also link to http://www.discovery.org/jpl for more information.  Be sure to remind people to be respectful in your message, but indicate that as a taxpayer who ultimately pays for the budget of JPL, you think it's wrong to use taxpayer resources to promote discrimination against intelligent design.

 (2) If you are a blogger, Facebooker, Twitterer, etc.: Now through Friday Dec 2, PLEASE post information about David's case supporting him!  Again, below is sample information you can post, and you can refer people to http://www.discovery.org/jpl for more information.

Thanks guys-David is one of our own and he needs our support right now.  Happy Thanksgiving.

Stand Up Now for David Coppedge's Right to Speak about Intelligent Design!

Urgent Action Required: Contact the leaders of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab and demand they make things right.

The Facts  According to a discrimination lawsuit filed in California Superior Court, supervisors at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) illegally harassed, demoted and retaliated against computer systems administrator David Coppedge without warning after he occasionally loaned pro-intelligent design science videos to some of his colleagues. Coppedge's actions were deemed inappropriate even though his colleagues were apparently allowed free reign to attack intelligent design in the workplace. After Coppedge filed his discrimination lawsuit, his position was suspiciously terminated by JPL in January 2011. On Nov. 18, 2011, a judge ruled that Coppedge's case presented legitimate issues of fact and law and ordered that the case move forward to a jury trial. Rather than settle the case, the Jet Propulsion Lab has continued to wage legal war on David Coppedge-wasting precious taxpayer dollars in the process.

Take Action Now  Your phone calls and emails are urgently needed to get NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab to stop its discrimination against employees who think there is scientific evidence of intelligent design. Contact these JPL leaders right now and ask them to settle the Coppedge lawsuit and stop discriminating against employees who believe the universe was intelligently designed:

Dr. Charles Elachi, Director of JPL
Office phone: 818 354-5673
Email address:
charles.elachi@jpl.nasa.gov

Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau, President of Cal Tech [Cal Tech operates JPL under a contract with NASA]
Office phone: 626-395-6301
Email address:
chameau@caltech.edu

Be respectful in your message, but indicate that as a taxpayer who ultimately pays for the budget of JPL, you think it's wrong to use taxpayer resources to promote discrimination against intelligent design

We urge you to contact two individuals to express support for David's free speech and to encourage his complete exoneration and rehiring by NASA.  The first contact is NASA's administrator, Charles Bolden, at 202-358-1010 and charles.bolden@nasa.gov.  The second contact is Texas Congressman Ralph Hall, (R-TX-4), who in the new Congress is chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee that oversees NASA (Phone 972-771-9118, fax 972-722-0907)  If you have Congressman Hall's email, please use that too!  Please politely contact them both.  The message to be communicated to both NASA and Congressman Hall is simple: NASA immediately needs to investigate the harassment, demotion, and firing of intelligent design supporter David Coppedge at its taxpayer-funded Jet Propulsion Lab.

Note that since we first reported this that additional fax numbers, said to be one of the most effective ways of contacting Congressman Hall, have been sent to us.  Fax and phone numbers for assorted offices are:

Washington:      fax:202-225-3332 phone:202-225-6673

Rockwall:        fax:972-722-0907 phone:972-771-9118
